School bells will be ringing soon, and it's time for parents to figure out how to cut the cost of school supplies, and make those hard-earned dollars stretch farther.
It doesn’t matter if moms and dads are seasoned shoppers, or doing it for the first time -- it’s always a pleasure to start the school year off right by finding ways to save money on back-to-school items. Don’t Spend Money on Unnecessary Back-to-school ItemsPrior to shopping for the upcoming school year, take inventory of kids' existing pieces of clothing to determine what needs to be added to their wardrobes. There's no rule stating kids must be covered from head to toe in brand new apparel the first few days of school. Coupling old clothes with new pieces will give children the crisp, clean look they want without the extra cost. School-agers often have supplies from previous school years that can be reused, or passed on to their younger siblings. Avoid falling into the trap of buying items such as book-bags and lunchboxes just because they sport popular cartoon characters or television personalities on them. These items are adorable, but if the goal is to save money on school supplies, buying generic is a much better option. Buy School Clothes That Won’t Go Out of StyleIt’s okay to buy a few trendy pieces to fill kids’ back-to-school wardrobes -- but children grow fast, and trends fade even faster. So stay away from fads, and stick to buying clothes that never go out of style. Take Advantage of Back-to-School Sales and Tax-Free HolidaysRead the paper frequently to watch for those “too good to be true” sales that appear throughout the summer months, and take advantage of them. Also, find out if your state of residence offers a tax-free holiday where families can shop for back-to-school supplies without paying sales tax. Make a School Supply Budget and Stick to ItIn a perfect world, all parents would be able to purchase every item on their children's back-to-school lists, but unfortunately, this is not the case. So before hitting the stores, take a look at your family's financial situation and create a school supply budget that's realistic. Buy school supplies that are absolutely essential to start with, and when the budgeted amount of money is reached, the nonessential items will have to wait until more money is available to spend. Also, Children tend to distract and cause parents to overspend when they accompany them to the store, so leave the kiddos at home when the bulk of the back-to-school shopping is being done. Taking the time to implement a few of these money saving strategies can help ease some of the financial burden that back-to-school shopping can bring.
